Artemis function in VDJ recombination. RAG complexes(RAG1 and RAG2) together with HMG create a synaptic complex by joining two disparate RSS. Upon binding, the RAG proteins generate hairpins at the coding ends and double-strand breaks are introduced. DNA-PK phosphorylates Artemis which opens the hairpins during the non-homologous end-joining pathway of DNA repair
